Nigeria to roll out 112 as national emergency number

The Nigerian Federal Government is accelerating the nationwide rollout of 112 as the country’s single, universal toll-free emergency number. This initiative aims to replace existing fragmented emergency lines to provide citizens with a unified access point for medical crises, fires, road accidents, and security incidents.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has directed a newly constituted committee to develop a comprehensive operational roadmap and standard operating procedures. The committee includes representatives from the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Communications Commission, the National Emergency Management Agency, and the Federal Road Safety Corps. The final framework will be submitted to the National Economic Council for formal endorsement.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the need to follow global best practices and assured that necessary financial resources would be provided to drive the implementation process.
