Nigeria UN Envoy Jimoh Ibrahim Says Africa Doesn't Need Aid

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, told a UN reception in New York that Africa is a rich continent that does not require aid from other regions. He argued that what Africa needs is trade, collaboration, cooperation and partnership, and thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump for launching the “Trade over Aid” programme.

Ibrahim noted that participation by African nations in the U.S. initiative remains low – only six countries have signed up – and warned that Africa’s lack of a permanent seat on the UN Security Council may contribute to global insecurity. His remarks were made while honouring Ahunna Eziakonwa, newly appointed Senior Adviser on Africa to UN Secretary‑General António Guterres.
