Nigeria Union of Journalists demands probe into alleged DSS assault on reporter
The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has condemned the alleged assault of a reporter by an officer of the Department of State Services (DSS). The incident reportedly occurred at the Yankari Game Reserve during the commissioning of a solar power station and facility upgrades.
According to the NUJ, Bashir Adamu, a reporter with the Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC) and a member of the Bauchi State Government House Press Crew, was allegedly slapped three times by the officer. The officer was reportedly attached to a visiting delegation from the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).
The union described the conduct as unacceptable and a violation of the constitutional rights of journalists to perform their duties without intimidation. The NUJ has demanded a thorough investigation by the appropriate authorities to identify the officer involved and ensure appropriate disciplinary and legal action is taken if the allegations are proven.
