Nigeria unveils Capital Market Master Plan 2.0 to reach $1 trillion

The Nigerian government has launched the Nigeria Capital Market Master Plan 2.0 (2026–2036) and a National Savings Strategy to deepen financial markets and support the nation's goal of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030.

Unveiled by Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, the roadmap aims to expand the capital market from approximately ₦250 trillion to ₦750 trillion by 2036. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) also targets a market value exceeding $1 trillion. Key objectives include increasing retail investors from 6 million to 20 million, raising the number of listed companies from 146 to 250, and increasing equity market capitalization from 33 percent to 60 percent of GDP.

To achieve these goals, the government plans to increase collective investment scheme assets from $5.6 billion to $56 billion and raise annual diaspora investment from $4 billion to $10 billion. The plan also seeks to expand corporate bond issuance fivefold and increase cross-border listings from 5 to 40. Additionally, the government is engaging with MSCI to transition Nigeria from Frontier Market status to an Emerging Markets classification.
