Nigeria unveils measures to combat rising air pollution

The Nigerian government has announced a new series of measures to combat rising air pollution and its associated health risks. Key initiatives include establishing a national framework for testing vehicular and generator emissions, expanding air quality monitoring stations, and promoting cleaner fuels. Additionally, the government aims to implement a National Clean Cooking Policy to achieve universal access to clean cooking energy by 2030.

Data from the Air Quality Life Index indicates that all of Nigeria’s more than 200 million residents live in areas where annual particulate pollution exceeds World Health Organization safety guidelines. The national average for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is approximately 4.6 times higher than the WHO recommended limit.

The health consequences are severe, with pollution-related illnesses impacting life expectancy. In Lagos, a World Bank study estimated that air pollution contributed to approximately 11,200 premature deaths in a single year, with children under five accounting for roughly 60 percent of those fatalities.
