Nigeria urged to adapt China’s poverty reduction model

The Nigerian Federal Government and the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN) have been urged to adapt lessons from China’s poverty reduction model to address Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges. During a strategic workshop in Abuja, stakeholders emphasized that Nigeria should not attempt a wholesale replication of the Chinese system but should instead tailor its elements to fit local political, economic, and institutional realities.

Experts and diplomats suggested a shift from short-term welfare interventions toward structural policies that build productive capacity, expand economic opportunities, and improve access to infrastructure and social services. Key areas for potential learning include agricultural productivity, targeted poverty reduction, social protection, and human capital investment.

Representing Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai, Counselor Sun Xuekun highlighted China’s historic achievements, noting that the country has lifted over 800 million people out of poverty since 1978. He stated that China eradicated absolute poverty and met the United Nations 2030 Agenda targets ten years ahead of schedule by focusing on strong leadership, accountability, and targeted alleviation strategies.
