Nigeria urged to prioritize sustainable aquaculture for food security

Professor Wasiu Jimoh of the University of Ilorin has called on the Nigerian government to prioritize sustainable aquaculture as a strategic pillar of the nation’s food security and economic agenda. During the university’s 306th inaugural lecture, Jimoh emphasized that increased investment in research, innovation, and local technology development is essential to building a resilient and globally competitive industry.

A key focus of the proposal is reducing the sector's reliance on imported conventional feed ingredients, such as fishmeal and soybean meal. Jimoh’s research explores alternatives including plant-based proteins, phytogenic additives, and circular-economy principles. He noted that developing functional aquafeeds—utilizing probiotics, prebiotics, and natural immunostimulants—could improve fish health, reduce antibiotic misuse, and enhance overall productivity.

Jimoh argued that a strengthened aquaculture sector would drive national economic development by creating employment, ensuring food and nutrition sovereignty, and providing sustainable livelihoods. He urged feed manufacturers, regulatory agencies, and veterinary professionals to collaborate on the formulation and certification of these sustainable feed alternatives.
