Nigeria Urges De‑Escalation of Houthi‑Saudi Tensions

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, issued a statement urging immediate de‑escalation between Yemen’s Houthi movement and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Nigeria warned that further hostilities could worsen insecurity in the Middle East, endanger civilian lives and destabilise regional peace.

The statement stressed Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful dispute resolution, international law and the United Nations Charter, calling on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and pursue dialogue. It noted that the conflict, which began when the Houthis seized Sana’a in 2014 and prompted a Saudi‑led coalition intervention in 2015, has caused massive humanitarian suffering across Yemen.

Nigeria cautioned that any escalation could have wider implications for regional security and emphasized diplomacy as the most effective means to prevent further deterioration.
