Nigeria warns foreign diplomats against comments on 2027 elections

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has cautioned foreign diplomatic missions against making “unguarded comments, disparaging remarks, or unsolicited lectures on democracy” regarding the country’s upcoming 2027 general elections.

During a briefing with the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja, the minister emphasized that as Africa’s largest democracy, developments in Nigeria carry regional and international implications. She urged envoys to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and utilize established diplomatic channels for communication rather than public interventions.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu assured the diplomatic community that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to conducting elections that are “peaceful, free, fair and credible in all ramifications.” The engagement was intended to strengthen mutual understanding and partnership between the Ministry and accredited foreign missions.
