Nigeria warns of counterfeit COVID-19 vaccines from China
The Nigerian Federal Government has issued an alert regarding counterfeit COVID-19 vaccines circulating in Africa. According to the Federal Ministry of Health, approximately 3,000 doses of fake vaccines, which were destined for Africa from China, have been intercepted.
Dr. Adebimpe Adebiyi, Director of Hospital Services at the Federal Ministry of Health, notified the heads of federal tertiary health institutions of the threat. The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 reported that these fraudulent vaccines are already in circulation across the continent.
To mitigate the risk of further illegal imports, the Nigeria Customs Service has designated Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport as the sole point of entry for all imported COVID-19 vaccines. Authorities are working to ensure that no unauthorized institutions can sell or administer vaccines.
