Nigeria weather: NiMet forecasts thunderstorms and heavy rain

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued weather forecasts predicting widespread thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds across various regions of Nigeria through Saturday.

Forecasts for Friday include moderate to heavy rainfall in states such as Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory. Northern regions, including Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, and Borno, face a high likelihood of strong winds, while Kano, Katsina, and Sokoto are under moderate risk.

On Saturday, NiMet expects cloudy intervals to transition into widespread late afternoon thunderstorms with moderate to heavy downpours. Coastal zones may experience heavy showers, increasing the risk of flash floods. The agency has advised the public to seek shelter during storms and warned of slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Aviation operators have been advised to request updated airport briefings and consider these weather conditions for flight planning and safety.
