Nigeria wheat production rises to 420,000 tonnes

Nigeria’s annual wheat production has increased from 120,000 metric tonnes to 420,000 metric tonnes, according to the Federal Government. This 300 per cent rise is attributed to the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP), a flagship initiative under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Prof. Ademola Adenle, Senior Special Adviser on Agriculture and Innovation to the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, stated that the scheme aims to achieve national food sovereignty by providing smallholder farmers with direct access to subsidized, high-quality inputs. These inputs include fertilizers, chemicals, improved seeds, and essential extension services, distributed through agro-dealers.

Beyond input distribution, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security intends to implement broader reforms to strengthen the agricultural value chain, covering production, processing, distribution, and marketing. Adenle also identified the 1978 Land Use Act as a structural bottleneck to productivity due to inefficient land access systems.
