Nigeria women’s health: Minister links wellness to $1tn economic goal
At the Her Health, Her Power Conference Africa 2026 in Abuja, Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, emphasized that investing in women’s health is a foundational requirement for achieving the nation’s goal of a $1 trillion economy.
Dr. Victory Njoku, founder of the Vickyheldan Empowerment Foundation, highlighted a critical gap between policy and practice, noting that while Nigeria has numerous women’s health policies, there is a lack of systemic execution. She advocated for increased community engagement and stronger collaborations between the government and NGOs to improve healthcare access, particularly in rural areas.
Minister Sulaiman-Ibrahim was also recognized with multiple honors, including the Distinguished Public Service Icon – Minister of the Year and the Presidential Women’s Economic Empowerment Leadership Award. While acknowledging these accolades, she noted that the social development sector remains underfunded and called for multi-sectoral partnerships to expand the government's impact on women's economic inclusion.
