Nigeria youth leaders discuss political barriers and development policies

During the 2026 International Youth Day celebrations, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido criticized the practical implementation of the Not-Too-Young-To-Run Act in Nigeria. Lamido argued that the law has become theoretical rather than functional because the high costs of election forms, campaign expenses, and management make it nearly impossible for approximately 99.9 percent of youth aspirants to compete.

Lamido suggested that the electoral system should be subsidized to make political participation viable for young people. He noted that while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has implemented some subsidies, such as reducing costs for certain gubernatorial aspirants, significant financial barriers remain.

In Gombe State, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya announced the approval of the Gombe State Youth Policy. This framework aims to provide a coordinated approach to youth development by focusing on education, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, digital literacy, and leadership development. The governor stated that the policy is intended to empower young people to participate actively in governance and shape the state's future.
