Nigerian academic community mourns passing of two prominent scholars

Nigeria is mourning the loss of two prominent academics. Professor Alfred Kasunmu (SAN), a distinguished legal scholar and former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, passed away at the age of 92.

Kasunmu was a pioneer in Nigerian legal education, having served as a lecturer at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and later as the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Lagos. He was recognized as one of the earliest members of the Inner Bar after being appointed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1978.

Separately, the academic community is honoring Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose, a renowned linguist who passed away at age 94. Professor Bamgbose was a foundational figure in Nigerian linguistics and served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ibadan between 1971 and 1973. He is credited with establishing the discipline's groundwork within the university and across other Nigerian institutions.
