Nigerian academic unions threaten strikes over government agreements

Academic unions in Nigeria are escalating industrial actions against the Federal Government over unfulfilled agreements and poor working conditions.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has authorized 20 federal and state universities to commence industrial action following what National President Prof. Christopher Piwuna described as the “haphazard implementation” of the December 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement. The union warned that campus unrest is becoming inevitable as institutions prepare to satisfy internal requirements to launch strikes.

Simultaneously, the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government, set to expire on August 31. The association expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of negotiations regarding the welfare of medical and dental academics. NAMDA highlighted that the lack of urgency in resolving these issues contributes to a brain drain of professionals and threatens the quality of medical education and healthcare delivery in the country.
