Nigerian academics urge research collaboration and AI adaptation

Academic leaders in Nigeria are calling for significant shifts in research and teaching methodologies to address modern technological and societal challenges.

At Igbinedion University, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye and FAO Policy Officer Prof. Afeikhena Jerome urged postgraduate researchers to move beyond research silos. They emphasized the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to address complex issues in climate, health, food, and digital systems, advocating for the translation of academic findings into practical societal solutions.

Separately, Prof. Abel Olajide Olorunnisola, Vice-Chancellor of Bells University of Technology, highlighted the impact of artificial intelligence on higher education. He noted that tools like ChatGPT have changed how students access knowledge, making traditional lecture-based teaching insufficient. Olorunnisola urged lecturers to adopt more interactive classroom methods to engage students who can now independently verify information and generate learning materials through digital platforms.
