Nigerian Air Force ATR 42 crash in Ondo State triggers investigation

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is conducting search and recovery operations following the crash of an ATR 42-500 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on October 5, 2026. The aircraft was traveling from Benin City to Lagos when the accident occurred in a swampy area. All 25 people on board, including five crew members and 20 passengers, are confirmed dead.

A 12-member Aircraft Accident Investigation Board, including representatives from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has been established to determine the cause of the crash. Multi-agency teams involving the NAF, the Nigerian Navy, and the NSIB are working round-the-clock to recover wreckage from the submerged, muddy terrain using specialist divers, hydrographic surveys, and satellite imagery.

The incident has prompted significant government response. The Nigerian House of Representatives has mandated an investigation and an audit of the airworthiness of all NAF aircraft. Locally, residents of Igbokoda have reported an offensive odor at the site, leading Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to order fumigation and the distribution of health supplies to mitigate environmental and health concerns.
