Nigerian Air Force begins acquisition of 12 US Viper helicopters

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has officially commenced the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States. A formal beam signing ceremony was held at the Bell Textron facility in Amarillo, Texas, marking the transition from the contractual phase to active production.

The procurement is being conducted through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. Bell Textron is responsible for manufacturing the 12 aircraft and providing associated engineering, program management, and logistical support. Production is expected to be completed by early 2029.

Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, Chief of the Air Staff, led the Nigerian delegation to the ceremony. He stated that the acquisition is a milestone in efforts to build a more professional and mission-ready force. The helicopters are intended to modernize the NAF and strengthen Nigeria’s defense capabilities against terrorism, insurgency, and other armed groups.
