Nigerian Air Force commissions upgraded runway and apron in Rivers State

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commissioned a reconstructed runway and military apron in Rivers State to bolster operational readiness and national security. The facilities were unveiled by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke.

The upgrades are designed to improve aircraft deployment, maintenance, and turnaround times, specifically supporting security operations in the South-South region. The NAF intends to use the enhanced infrastructure to combat terrorism, insurgency, banditry, piracy, organized crime, and illegal bunkering. Additionally, the facilities will support humanitarian efforts, including medical evacuations, search-and-rescue, and disaster response.

Air Marshal Aneke credited the Rivers State Government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, for providing the necessary funding and support for the reconstruction. He also noted the state's role in handing over an AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter to the NAF, describing the collaboration as a significant contribution to national defense.
