Nigerian Air Force crash in Ondo State triggers Senate probe and investigation

Following the fatal crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on October 5, 2026, which killed 25 people, the Nigerian Senate has ordered an investigation into military aircraft maintenance funding and serviceability. Lawmakers have called for a comprehensive audit of both the presidential and military aircraft fleets to address concerns regarding ageing aircraft and safety compliance.

The NAF has established a 12-member Aircraft Accident Investigation Board, led by Air Vice Marshal FO Ankeli, to determine the causes of the accident. The board includes experts in aviation operations, engineering, and safety, alongside representatives from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau. The investigation will examine technical, human, and organizational factors.

In the local community of Igbokoda, the monarch, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, has raised urgent alarms regarding environmental and public health risks. He reported that decomposing human remains and suspected aviation fuel spillage have contaminated local water sources and created an offensive stench. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with teams currently using swamp buggies to manage water levels and focusing efforts on locating the aircraft's black box.
