Nigerian architects address housing deficits and building safety

Chapters of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) in Kogi and Edo states are addressing housing challenges and professional standards in alignment with World Architecture Day.

The Kogi State chapter, led by Chairman John Ochune Attah, is preparing to host the 2026 World Architecture Day and Annual General Meeting in Lokoja. The event will focus on addressing the state’s housing deficit through discussions on affordable housing, indigenous building techniques, and sustainable materials. The program aims to bring together professionals, government representatives, and academics to explore practical policy and financing approaches.

In Edo State, NIA Chairman Wilson Agbonta has launched a campaign urging residents to hire qualified professionals to prevent building collapses and flooding caused by poor planning and quackery. Emphasizing the theme ‘Housing is a Right, build it right’, the chapter is working to improve professional oversight and ensure compliance with architectural standards to protect citizens and the built environment.
