Nigerian Army deploys 600 troops to India for specialized training

The Nigerian Army has begun deploying 600 personnel to India to undergo specialized training in jungle and mountain warfare. The program aims to enhance combat readiness and tactical proficiency in difficult terrains, such as dense forests and mountainous regions, to better confront terrorism, insurgency, and other security threats.

The first batch of 300 personnel departed from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, 2026, via two Indian Air Force aircraft, a C-17 transport plane and an Airbus A321. Major General UG Yusuf, representing Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, witnessed the departure alongside the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria.

This initiative is intended to improve operational maneuverability and the ability to deny criminal groups safe havens in remote locations. The deployment also serves to strengthen defense cooperation between Nigeria and India regarding military training and capacity development.
