Nigerian Army launches 2026 combat proficiency competitions

The Nigerian Army has launched its 2026 combat proficiency competitions across different units to enhance troop readiness and professionalism.

In Sokoto, the 8 Division commenced its Inter-Brigade Combat Proficiency Competition. Major General Paul Koughna, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, stated that the event is designed to test resilience, discipline, and operational preparedness. The competition aims to evaluate training standards and improve combat readiness through tests in professional military knowledge, leadership, marksmanship, and tactical proficiencies.

Simultaneously, the Guards Brigade began its own competition at the Lungi Barracks in Abuja. Major General Ifeanyi Otu emphasized that continuous training is critical for enhancing operational readiness and responding to emerging threats. The Guards Brigade competition includes assessments in physical fitness, map reading, combat swimming, obstacle crossing, and shooting. In the opening obstacle-crossing event, the 7 Guards Battalion secured first place, followed by the 176 Battalion and the Guards Brigade Garrison.
