Nigerian banks settle aircraft import duties amid Customs crackdown
At least three major Nigerian banks have settled outstanding import duties on aircraft following a verification drive by the Nigeria Customs Service. One recent payment by a financial institution totaled approximately N3 billion (roughly US$2.2 million).
The enforcement action is being driven by a collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which provided a list of privately owned aircraft for duty verification. The drive has reportedly targeted aircraft owners, including banks, oil and gas companies, and individuals.
Officials indicate that while some debtors had previously sought legal recourse, several have now moved to settle their obligations. The Customs Service has signaled that enforcement efforts will continue against owners of aircraft with unpaid duties.
