Nigerian Bar Association calls for faster criminal justice delivery
The Benin branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the nationwide implementation of a speedy trial model following a successful prosecution in Edo State. The association's chairman, Omorodion Omoigui, urged the judiciary to replicate the efficiency demonstrated by the Edo State Special Criminal Court.
The call follows a judgment delivered by the Special Criminal Court regarding a kidnapping case that occurred at the Benin Vegetable Market on June 14, 2026. Established by the Edo State Government to prosecute kidnapping and cult-related offenses, the court began operations on July 1, 2026.
Omoigui emphasized that the association is not advocating for rushed justice, but rather for a system where criminal cases are handled efficiently without compromising due process, fair hearings, or the fundamental rights of the accused. He noted that the case serves as a lesson in how coordinated efforts between security agencies, the judiciary, and legal practitioners can effectively address serious security challenges.
