Nigerian Bar Association urges security reforms in Plateau State

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sponsor an Executive Bill that would move security from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List. This reform aims to grant state governors actual control over security operations and personnel, rather than leaving them with the title of Chief Security Officer without operational authority.

The demand follows persistent attacks on communities in Plateau State, specifically within the Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bokkos Local Government Areas. The NBA noted that the current security command structure has proven inadequate in addressing recurring violence, including the killing of community vigilantes during curfew hours in Mangu.

In addition to legislative reform, the association urged the Federal Government to ensure that armed forces and paramilitary agencies are better equipped, motivated, and disciplined. They also emphasized the need for strengthened border security and surveillance in Plateau, Bauchi, and Taraba states to prevent further loss of life and property.
