Nigerian Citizen Chika Ibe Killed in Cape Town Police Raid

Chika Ibe, a Nigerian from Abia State, died on 23 July 2026 after a South African Police Service operation at the Parksig Villas Complex in Bellville, Cape Town. The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) alleges that officers subjected Ibe to severe beating, torture and suffocation, resulting in his death.

NICASA President Rev. Frank Onyekwelu condemned the incident as a gross violation of human rights and called on South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to launch an immediate, transparent investigation and prosecute any officers found responsible. The association also urged Nigerian diplomatic missions to intervene and warned against retaliatory actions. The case follows two other killings of Nigerian nationals in South Africa earlier in June 2026, heightening concerns over xenophobic violence and police conduct.

South African authorities, including Western Cape officials, have expressed support for the victim’s family, while the broader community calls for accountability and the protection of foreign residents.
