Nigerian Communications Commission addresses rising data usage and consumer complaints
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is addressing rising consumer concerns regarding internet data usage and service quality. In July 2026, Nigerian telecommunications subscribers consumed a record 1.66 million terabytes of data, a significant increase from previous months and a 43.6 per cent rise compared to the same period in 2025.
Despite record consumption, many subscribers have reported rapid data depletion, leading to over 23,000 complaints against major operators in the first half of 2026. Industry analysis suggests this is driven by structural changes, including increased smartphone penetration and a shift toward 4G and 5G connections. Faster bandwidth allows applications and streaming services to consume more data per session, raising the average monthly usage per subscriber.
In response to these challenges, NCC Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida has urged staff to prioritize consumer satisfaction and effective service delivery. He emphasized that while technology supports the sector, regulatory actions must focus on empathy, professionalism, and clear communication to address stakeholder concerns and ensure transparent service.
