Nigerian Communications Commission launches zero-rated data for digital education

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched the ‘Zero-Rated Data Access to Educational Platforms and Content’ initiative to expand affordable access to digital learning resources across Nigeria. The program aims to bridge educational inequalities and support human capital development, which is central to the government’s goal of building a $1 trillion economy.

Under the Operator-Sponsored Model, eligible users will receive a daily allowance of up to 100MB of free data to access approved educational platforms. This translates to approximately 700MB per week, 3GB per month, and 36.5GB annually. Depending on the type of activity, the daily allowance is estimated to provide between two and five hours of study time. For example, text-based learning may allow for up to 10 hours of access, while audio-based lessons may provide one to three hours of engagement.

NCC Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida stated that the initiative is designed to link students to teachers and materials regardless of their location, helping to mitigate regional disparities in educational resources. The program is intended to equip Nigerians with the digital skills necessary for long-term economic growth.
