Nigerian Copyright Commission seizes N7m in pirated books in Abuja

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has seized suspected pirated literary works valued at approximately N7 million during a raid at Garki Market in Abuja. The operation, conducted on September 4, 2026, was an intelligence-led enforcement action aimed at disrupting the illegal storage and distribution of copyrighted materials.

Led by the NCC Director of Operations, Femi Ajala, and supported by armed police from the FCT Command, the enforcement team discovered and confiscated several cartons and bags of books suspected of being reproduced without authorization. Following the seizure, the commission sealed the premises.

The NCC stated that piracy poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s creative and publishing industries by depriving authors and publishers of legitimate income and undermining investment in the sector. The commission emphasized its zero-tolerance stance and commitment to sustained enforcement against the illegal exploitation of copyrighted works.
