Nigerian Correctional Service vehicle attacked in Rivers State

An attack on a Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) vehicle conveying inmates and personnel to court resulted in one death in Rivers State. The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, along Aba Road in the Oil Mill market area of Port Harcourt.

According to NCoS public relations officer Jane Osuji, the vehicle encountered a traffic holdup, during which individuals allegedly attacked the transport. In an attempt to repel the attackers and safeguard the inmates, members of the armed escort team fired warning shots into the air, which led to the fatal incident.

All inmates involved in the movement were safely returned to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Port Harcourt. The NCoS condemned the attack, stating that such conduct endangers lives and obstructs official responsibilities. Security authorities are currently investigating the circumstances to determine culpability.
