Nigerian court remands former NBA official in DSS custody

In Abuja, a Federal High Court has ordered the remand of Gabriel Nkup Tsenyen, the former chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Shendam branch, in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). Tsenyen faces two counts of alleged cyberstalking and incitement. The remand is set until August 20, at which time the court will determine the propriety of the arraignment. Defense counsel argued that the lawyer had already been arraigned on similar charges, raising concerns of double jeopardy, though the prosecution denied knowledge of a prior proceeding.

Separately, legal practitioner Uchenna Ojembe has called on the Nigerian Federal Government to strengthen judicial accountability to ensure the speedy dispensation of justice. Ojembe emphasized that judicial officers should be held responsible when courts fail to sit without explanation, noting the burden placed on litigants who travel long distances for proceedings. He advocated for the appointment of more judges to manage heavy caseloads and improve efficiency within the sector.
