Nigeria Court Schedules June 30 Ruling on Omoyele Sowore Bail

A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the hearing of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore’s bail‑revocation application to 30 June 2026. Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore to remain remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre until that date. Sowore faces cybercrime and criminal defamation charges after social‑media posts that described President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal.”

His defence team argued that the bench warrant and bail revocation should be set aside, citing his health and the need for a fair trial. Prosecutors, led by Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), opposed the motion, stating that Sowore had not presented sufficient factual basis to merit relief. The court declined a request to release Sowore pending the ruling.

Separately, the Department of State Services (DSS) acknowledged public concern over a scuffle between its operatives and Sowore’s supporters at the court and ordered an investigation. The DSS reiterated that the charges stem from a 2025 post on Sowore’s X and Facebook accounts. The pending decision on 30 June will determine whether Sowore regains bail and remains free to continue his political activities pending trial.
