Nigeria Democratic Congress faces internal shifts and legal rulings
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is undergoing several internal and strategic shifts ahead of the 2027 elections. The party has announced the withdrawal of recognition for its diaspora chapters, citing a court ruling that prohibits Nigerian political parties from operating chapters outside the country’s territorial boundaries.
In Bauchi State, Ibrahim Muhammad Kashim has resigned as the NDC governorship candidate, effective October 16, 2026. While Kashim stated his commitment to the development of Bauchi remains unchanged, he has not yet announced his next political move.
On the national stage, the NDC is navigating complex opposition dynamics. The Kwankwasiyya Movement has accused Atiku Abubakar of attempting to undermine the political interests of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Meanwhile, the Abia State chapter of the NDC has urged supporters to verify political reports through official channels, reaffirming its support for Peter Obi for the presidency while maintaining Etugo Ndubuisi Ogah as its governorship candidate for Abia State. Additionally, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticized the Federal Government for not declaring the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty a public holiday, highlighting rising poverty rates in the country.
