Nigerian domestic airlines face high flight delay rates

Data from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) reveals significant operational challenges in Nigeria’s domestic aviation sector. In August, airlines delayed 4,765 out of 7,961 scheduled operations, a disruption rate of 59.9 percent. Additionally, 36 flights were cancelled across 15 monitored airlines.

United Nigeria Airlines reported the highest delay rate at 76.6 percent, while Air Peace recorded the largest absolute number of delays with 1,330 instances. Other airlines experiencing notable disruptions included Enugu Air, ValueJet, and Aero. Conversely, Umza Air recorded the lowest delay rate at approximately 12.9 percent with no cancellations.

While the statistics highlight airline performance, industry analysis suggests that many disruptions stem from systemic issues beyond carrier control. Factors such as apron congestion at major hubs like Lagos and Abuja, inadequate infrastructure, and weather-related constraints contribute to delays. Congestion often prevents aircraft from pushing back even after boarding is complete, creating chain reactions that can lead to cancellations due to crew duty-time limitations.
