Nigerian Economic Summit Group to address industrial decline and export dependence

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has announced that its 32nd summit will focus on addressing Nigeria’s structural dependence on raw material exports and the importation of finished goods. Under the theme “Growth that Works: Delivering Jobs, Productivity and Shared Prosperity,” the event aims to explore strategies for transforming the nation into a high-value industrial hub.

The NESG identified several critical barriers to industrial growth, including high energy costs, inadequate financing, and intense competition from imported subsidized goods. The group noted that despite having vast natural resources and a large domestic market, Nigeria’s manufacturing sector's contribution to GDP is declining, failing to create the necessary linkages seen in industrializing economies.

According to the NESG, these productivity challenges are structural rather than cyclical, stemming from long-term underinvestment in infrastructure, inefficient regulatory environments, and weak institutional capacity. The summit intends to bring together government officials, businesses, and investors to discuss solutions such as Special Economic Zones, fiscal incentives for value-added production, and improved local content frameworks.
