Nigerian engineering institutes call for increased local capacity
The Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA) has announced a call for research papers ahead of its 2026 conference, MARVEL Nigeria 2026, to be held in Lagos. The event aims to address maritime sovereignty through vessel development, energy transition, and local capacity building.
Research tracks for the conference include classification and standards for West African waters, green shipping and emissions reduction, cabotage and shipbuilding to strengthen domestic fleets, and the hydrodynamics of domestic craft. The initiative seeks to promote indigenous participation and sustainable development across West African waters.
Separately, the Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE) is advocating for a stronger link between engineering and national security. During its 39th International Conference in Abuja, NIMechE National Chairman Engr. Dr. Babagana Modu Tela emphasized the need to boost local production and encourage collaboration between government, academia, and industry to convert engineering knowledge into solutions for national needs.
