Nigeria stock market rebounds following FTSE Russell reclassification

The Nigerian equities market experienced a period of volatility and recovery in August 2026. While the market faced a significant depreciation of N2.5 trillion earlier in the month due to a revised Open Market Operations (OMO) framework by the Central Bank of Nigeria, it staged a strong rebound toward the end of the month.

Investor sentiment was bolstered by two major developments: FTSE Russell's confirmation that Nigeria will be reclassified from Unclassified to Frontier Market status effective September 21, 2026, and Moody's decision to revise Nigeria's sovereign outlook from stable to positive. These moves are expected to improve market visibility and attract foreign portfolio investment.

During the week ending August 28, the NGX All-Share Index rose by 0.81 per cent, bringing market capitalization to approximately N155.83 trillion. The Oil & Gas and Banking sectors were primary drivers of this growth, with Seplat Energy and various tier-one banks seeing significant interest. Despite the recovery, trading volume saw a decline compared to previous weeks, partly due to a public holiday for Eid el-Maulud.
