Nigerian equities market faces correction amid record domestic trading
The Nigerian equities market is undergoing a period of correction following a significant rally. The NGX All-Share Index has faced recent declines, with some reports noting a loss of over N2 trillion in market value during a single week in August as investors engaged in profit-taking. Major sectors, including banking and insurance, have experienced selling pressure, with notable declines in stocks such as Fidelity Bank, First Holdco, and United Bank for Africa.
Despite this bearish trend, domestic investors have shown record-breaking activity. In the first seven months of 2026, local transactions reached N10.68 trillion, accounting for approximately 89.21% of total market activity. This surge in local participation, driven by both institutional and retail investors, has helped cushion the market against declining foreign portfolio investment, which has dropped to roughly 10.79% of total activity.
While the market faces challenges such as capital reallocation toward attractive fixed-income securities and cautious international sentiment, the year-to-date returns for the NGX remain high, at over 53%. Analysts suggest the market's performance has previously ranked among the best globally, though current volatility reflects a broader rebalancing of portfolios.
