Nigeria economy sees CBN rate cut and NGX market volatility

The Nigerian economy is experiencing significant shifts in monetary policy and equity market performance. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) recently implemented a 350 basis points interest rate cut, reducing the benchmark rate from 26.5 percent to 23 percent. This move, described as a “reset and recalibration,” aims to stabilize inflation, which is currently trending at 15.39%, and align rates with market yields.

On the Nigerian Exchange (NGX), market performance has been mixed. While the market saw a period of growth in September where listed equities gained N5.37 trillion in value, recent trading sessions have shown volatility. A shortened trading week due to the Independence Day public holiday saw the All-Share Index and market capitalization decline by approximately 0.5 percent, resulting in an N812 billion loss for investors.

Despite recent fluctuations, blue-chip companies continue to dominate the market. Eleven major firms, including Airtel Africa, Dangote Cement, and MTN Nigeria, account for approximately 75.14 percent of the total NGX market capitalization, valued at N122.56 trillion. This concentration reflects sustained investor interest in large-cap stocks across the banking, telecommunications, and cement sectors.
