Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye becomes viral sensation during 2026 World Cup despite team’s elimination
Maduka Okoye, the 1.97‑metre goalkeeper for Nigeria’s national team and Italy’s Serie A club Udinese, attracted massive attention on social media during the 2026 World Cup even though Nigeria did not qualify. A TikTok video in which he lip‑syncs a 50 Cent song amassed millions of views, making him one of the most searched football personalities while the tournament unfolded.
Okoye, born on 28 August 1999 in Düsseldorf to a Nigerian father and a French‑German mother, holds Nigerian, German and French citizenship. He progressed through the youth systems of Bayer Leverkusen and Fortuna Düsseldorf, later playing for Sparta Rotterdam—where he was named the club’s player of the year—Watford (until a shoulder injury) and currently Udinese. Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup was confirmed after a 1‑1 draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the African playoff, losing 4‑3 on penalties, leaving Okoye without a chance to appear on the world stage.
