Nigerian governors increase funding for state tertiary institutions

Governors in Ondo and Enugu states have approved significant increases in monthly subventions to support state-owned tertiary institutions and address staff welfare concerns.

In Ondo State, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa approved a 60 per cent increase in monthly subventions for all state-owned tertiary institutions. This measure, effective from August, aims to improve the learning environment, ensure prompt salary payments, and implement agreements reached between the Federal Government and university unions. The administration stated the move is intended to strengthen the capacity of these institutions to meet financial obligations.

In Enugu State, Governor Peter Mbah approved an additional N115 million monthly subvention for the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). This brings the total monthly state subvention to N276 million. The funding increase is part of an effort to address the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and ensure the university can meet its salary obligations and maintain academic services.
