Nigerian groups demand transparency over $2.5bn JBS livestock deal
A coalition of Nigerian civil society organizations, including farmer groups, pastoralist associations, and environmental advocates, is demanding transparency regarding a proposed $2.5 billion livestock investment by the Brazilian meat-processing company JBS.
The coalition is seeking the full text of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Federal Government and JBS nearly two years ago. Stakeholders argue that the lack of public information regarding the deal, which involves establishing six industrial meat-processing facilities, poses risks to Nigeria’s food security, land management, and rural livelihoods.
Specific concerns raised include the potential interference with traditional grazing routes, access to water resources, and the impact on local land ownership. Additionally, advocates noted that no Environmental and Social Impact Assessment has been released. The group has submitted Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to federal and state agencies and has indicated they may pursue legal action if the documents are not disclosed.
