Nigerian Guild of Editors calls for 50% presidential threshold
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has proposed significant constitutional and electoral reforms aimed at strengthening the nation’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections. During the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference held in Enugu, the Guild recommended implementing a 50 per cent threshold for presidential election victories.
Additional proposals include the requirement that all electoral disputes be resolved before the swearing-in of declared winners. The NGE also called for reforms regarding the appointment processes for the Chairman, National Commissioners, and Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as well as State Electoral Commissioners.
The conference addressed various threats to electoral democracy, including misinformation, disinformation, artificial intelligence, electoral insecurity, and declining public confidence in the voting process.
