Nigerian High Commission officials linked to disputed gold transaction

Two Nigerian nationals, including an official from the Nigerian High Commission in Kampala, have been linked to a disputed gold transaction involving $288,000. The case involves Sheikh Muhammad Haruna Bukenya, the Second Deputy Mufti, who is currently facing criminal proceedings at the Kampala City Hall Court.

In a letter to the Nigerian Ambassador to Uganda, Bukenya identified the High Commission’s First Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Abdullahi, and Dr. Sadiq Adam as individuals present during key stages of the transaction, including the gold-testing process and a meeting at the diplomatic mission. Bukenya has requested that the High Commission preserve CCTV footage from August 6, 2026, to provide an objective account of the events.

The prosecution alleges that Bukenya, businessman Muzamiru Elias Lubega, and other suspects obtained the funds from Muhammad Kwaido in Kampala by falsely claiming to sell three kilograms of gold.
