Nigerian individuals sentenced for fraud in Nigeria and United States

A 38‑year‑old lecturer at Kwara State College of Health Technology, Adebisi Ademola, was convicted by the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin and sentenced to six months imprisonment, fined N50,000 and ordered to forfeit his phone used in the romance‑scam scheme. The case involved his impersonation of a woman to defraud a victim and was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

In the United States, Nigerian engineer Adebanjo Popoola, a former St. Louis city building inspector, pleaded guilty to three counts of wire fraud for diverting about $1.64 million in public redevelopment funds to companies owned by his wife and sister. He faces a potential sentence of up to 60 years in prison, fines and restitution, with sentencing scheduled for October 6. The fraud involved false contract certifications and personal use of the misappropriated money.
