Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers inducts 79 new Fellows

The Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE) has inducted 79 new Fellows during its international conference and Annual General Meeting in Lagos. Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) President, Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, called on the new Fellows to use their expertise to address Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges, promote innovation, and mentor younger professionals.

Rabiu emphasized the importance of upholding professional ethics and integrity, noting that violations could lead to disciplinary actions, including the revocation of fellowships. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Engr. Olufemi Daramola, also addressed the assembly, urging engineers to prioritize sustainability and maintenance to improve citizens' quality of life amidst rapid urbanization.

In a separate discussion during the conference period, NICE representatives highlighted a gap between academic training and practical application for young engineers. Concerns were raised regarding deficiencies in site management, contract administration, and safety management. Alex Ifeagwazi, NICE South East Zone coordinator, advocated for the institutionalization of mentorship to help bridge this gap and transfer technical knowledge and professional networks to the next generation.
