Nigerian leaders debate language roles in education and trade

Nigerian political figures have voiced differing perspectives on the role of language in education and regional integration.

Michael Aondoakaa, the People’s Democratic Party governorship candidate for Benue State, advocated for increased emphasis on foreign language education, specifically French. Speaking at a conference at the Federal Polytechnic, Wannune, he argued that proficiency in French would facilitate smoother regional trade and economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Additionally, Aondoakaa pledged to establish specialized geriatric healthcare units and provide free basic treatment for elderly citizens if elected in 2027.

In contrast, Abia State Governor Alex Otti has supported the use of indigenous mother tongues as the primary language of instruction in early childhood education. Speaking at an event in Lagos, Otti cited research suggesting children learn more effectively when taught in their native languages. While acknowledging practical challenges such as the availability of fluent instructors and the limited reach of local languages beyond specific communities, he urged policymakers to address these limitations rather than reject the research findings.
