Nigerian leaders urge Igbo youths to join security forces

Political leaders in Nigeria are expressing concern over the declining number of Igbo youths enlisting in the nation's security forces.

During a burial ceremony for Lieutenant General Isaac Chikadibia Obiakor in Awka, Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, urged young people to join the military and other security agencies. Obi noted that while there is dignity in serving the fatherland, many youths are deterred because those in service are often neglected or treated unjustly. He emphasized the need for better remuneration and respect for military personnel and their families.

Senator Emma Nwachukwu of Anambra South echoed these concerns, warning of a future where there may be no Igbo officers in the Army, Navy, or Air Force. He attributed the trend to fears among young people regarding postings to regions active with Boko Haram. Nwachukwu called on various groups and the media to encourage recruitment to ensure the South-East region meets its quota within the armed forces.
